lots of watermelon to remember summer with.

i got this boquet from the farmer’s market. a. and i were totally intrigued by the ball-ish prickly flowers. “are they a cactus?” i asked. no. i don’t remember what he said they were actually – i think he said boat washers. he said they used to grow along the river with ferries and steamboats & people used to use them to fill life preserves.

one half of an embroidered table runner, thrifted for $5

the other half of the embroidered table runner. i think i will hang it above our bed.

today while walking to work we found a cat facing off with a crow. i think we really wanted to believe they were playing together first as the cat wasn’t doing anything except sniffing it and the bird was just staring at the cat. then the bird was hobbling and i got worried, let the mansy leave and go to work as i called animal shelters. i didn’t have a way to bring it in so i said i’d wait until they sent someone out. while i waited i played with the cat and talked to the neighbors. one of them brought out their large dog to scare the cat away but the cat and dog just ended up staring and sniffing at each other! it must’ve been a funny sight, dog sniffing cat who was lounging next to a hurt bird and me just standing there. i called work and told them i’d be late but after waiting for an hour i thought my coworkers had been nice enough and called my father to see if he could drive me to the animal shelter with the bird (i don’t have a license and can’t really drive anyway). so i went home to grab a crate i had been planning to use for shelving, a sheet i didn’t mind having a wild crow poop and lay on and some rubber garden gloves. went back and asked the mr. bird not to peck at me, pet him for a few minutes with the gloves on and gently put my hands around him without picking him up a few times so he would know i wasn’t going to hurt him. i was also just pretty scared because i have never picked up a bird before and really wished i had huge leather gloves that went up to my elbows and also maybe that i wasn’t wearing a skirt so that mosquitoes wouldn’t be able to eat my legs. so i scooped him up without being pecked, and laid him in the sheet where he looked relieved and snuggled into the sheet. the ride was bumpy and overwhelming for him and he didn’t seem happy to be at the shelter. they said they would be able to fix him and not kill him so i left the bird and the crate and hope he gets better soon. then i went to work two hours late and thanked my coworkers for being animal lovers.

sorry for the long absence. sometimes i just don’t feel like updating! what a horrible blogger i am. i have been taking a sewing class the past couple of weeks and this is the second thing i finished, the first being a tote bag. pretty simple dress using the anda pattern from burdastyle.com. it was perfect for today with the 100 degree heat. belt from american apparel. shoes thrifted cole haan. bicycles via craigslist. hope everyone is having a great summer!
funtimes! living vicariously through his photos today.
just been making food lately…
my mom used to make beef stroganauf when i was little and it was one of my favourite recipes! so i adapted it with gimme lean fake beef.
1 pkg curly noodles
half pkg or more depending on how much you want of gimme lean beef or morning star bacon (andrew’s fave)
1 can of annie’s vegetarian cream of mushroom soup
1 onion, diced
frozen peas to your liking
gouda or parmesean cheese
saute onions with beef or bacon, pour cream of mushroom soup over it, add peas
cook noodles
put it in a pot
grate some cheese over it or no cheese is good too if you’re vegan
bake at 375 until warm and toasty
eat it.
we tried fake meatloaf last night too and it turned out pretty well. it’s not fancy meatloaf with gravy or thick topping on it but it’s still good with some sauted veggies and ketchup!
1 pkg gimme lean beef
1 small onion, diced
1 bell pepper of any variety, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced or more if you’re a garlic fan
2 slices of bread
2 teaspoons ketchup
pepper & salt
saute onion, bell pepper and garlic until onions are soft
crumble bread
put it in a bowl with gimme beef & ketchup and squish it all together with your hands for a few minutes. this is the most fun part. put it in a loaf pan or mold it into a loaf and put it in an aluminum foil pie pan if you’re like us
bake at 375 for 40 minutes
eat it.
this makes one small loaf, good for two people
ok have fun vegetarians.
